Murder suspect says he was doing God's work

A Cypress man charged in the death of a Southwest Airlines flight attendant said Saturday that he was doing God's work when he went to a Montrose-area bar last month, hunting for a gay man to kill.

"I believe I'm Elijah, called by God to be a prophet," said 26-year-old Terry Mark Mangum, charged with murder June 11. " ... I believe with all my heart that I was doing the right thing."

For the rest of the article click here. There's a reason this guy feels justified in doing this. Care to guess what that reason is? Right answer: Because the Bible says it's OK! (Seems he missed the "Thou shalt not murder" part though.)

Thou shalt not kill, says the bible. Except the whole tome is full of god sanctioned murders and massacres. Loonies have been hearing voices that command them to kill all through history. I wonder how many of them were lying.

As much as Christians like to point at the 10 Commandments as moral compass, they were only intended as guidelines on the how the Jews acted and treated each other. They didn't apply in the least to other peoples Even Jesus himself wasn't concerned with the Gentiles: he was the Jewish messiah, sent to lead YHWH's chosen to salvation, and historically (if there even was a historical Jesus), there were no indications otherwise until Paul on the road to Damascus.

That was just a long, rambling way to say that Biblically, there isn't much to support the notion that "Thou shalt not murder" even applies to him anyway, and those god sanctioned murders of the Old Testament didn't go against the spirit of the text in any way. Christians would do well to actually read their sacred texts themselves instead of taking someone else's word for it.
